The wishing table
What does the world dine on 25th December? Whether festive day or not.
Roast pork or turkey? Carp with potatoe salad or fondue chinoise? Stew or sausages? Casual lunch?…
The objective is to document your set table on 25th December 2009.
The approach is up to you – it could be a picture, a movie, an audio recording, or any other medium of your choice.

I spent Christmas Eve with my my mother, sister and brother. This time we had dinner at my place, in the heart of Zurich. We prepared a finnish meal, we do that every year, since my mother is original finnish. Roast pork, several casseroles, for example one with mashed carrots and rice and one with “kohlrabi”. Besides potatos, peas, pickled herring and several salads and for dessert sweets like gingerbread and licorice.
I decorated the whole room with candels, golden bells and red ribbon.

Laura and I live together in Johnstown. Usually we spend the few days around Christmas at her parents’ place in Ohio, but this year my mom was in town from San Fransisco. The first dinner was at our house late Christmas Eve. My mom, her husband and his family, my sister, my uncle, his kids and his girlfriend all came over for a non-traditional meal that my mom had prepared. As opposed to a turkey or ham and the works, we ate dishes that mom liked to prepare when she used to live in Johnstown. All the stress of having a dinner at my house aside, the night was really nice.

Laura and I woke up Christmas morning and headed to my dad’s house 40 minutes to the West. I haven’t been to my dad’s for lunch on Christmas in the four years that I’ve been dating Laura. It was great – We opened presents, drank whiskey in our coffees and sat down to a pretty standard spread with my dad, his family and my granny.

After a quick nap, Laura and I drove another three hours to her parents’ house in Ohio. We got in around 8pm, Christmas night to a full house of people and a huge spread of leftovers from three hours earlier.

In China Christmas doesn’t really mean anything. Families gather for the Spring Festival (on the 14th of February this year), but Christmas is mainly a day for shopping as all the shopping centers have some big sales going on.
After almost 4 years here, Christmas has lost a lot of its meaning for me too. On the evening of the 24th, my partner and I bought one Chilean bottle of wine and had dinner in a good restaurant. On the 25th, we just ordered a pizza, gnocchi and had some nice French chocolate truffles for dessert.
It was a sunny day. That was our gift.

This was the first Christmas in my sister’s little apartment! It was really nice… Different from the “old school” Christmas I had with a lot o relatives, in front of the fireplace.
For the dinner we had Codfish with some kind of mash made with cornbread. We also had sweets and other types of appetizers. Some of us had Portuguese white wine.

After Christmas Dinner
These are some leftovers from Christmas dinner at my grandmother’s house. My family and I have been going there for Christmas dinner for 30+ years. It still feels the same as it always has. That’s one of the things I like about this photo—it could have been taken 20 or 30 years ago and would have looked exactly the same. I guess that’s what home feels like.

There’s nothing like “THE thing to eat on christmas” in my family. This year we had goose and different side dishes like potatoes, brussels sprouts, red cabbage, sauerkraut and other stuff.
