Preface to DES.200 Class Project
As an instructor teaching in the School of Architecture and Design at The American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates I have always looked for international collaboration that allows our students work to evoke dialog and be viewed across boundaries. This stems from my primary interest of studying and documenting the cultural identity of a cityscape which includes its people, social, public and commercial art, music and architecture, looking at visual language and forms of communications that brings communities and cultures together or sets them apart. A unique sensitivity to indigenous subcultures and exploration of the most common elements from daily lives often misunderstood, misinterpreted, or simply miss-communicated can be a source of fascination and an opportunity for creativity to me.
If you ask me what my life goal is it would be what I quoted on a poster that I designed in 2003 “… the grace of great things” by Rainer Maria Rilke, Rodin.
